A REESE WITHERSPOON x HELLO SUNSHINE BOOK CLUB PICK

"Get cozy because you won't be able to put this one down! Our final Reese's Book Club pick of 2019 is the thrilling murder-mystery Conviction by Denise Mina. This story combines suspense, international intrigue, and the murder of an entire family aboard a ship...following the one woman who may just have all the answers." (Reese Witherspoon)

The captivating, utterly unforgettable thriller for fans of Killing Eve and The Woman in the Window: A true-crime podcast sets a trophy wife's present life on a collision course with her secret past.

The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone.

Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life, a life she's taken great pains to leave behind. And she is convinced that she knows what really happened.

Then an unexpected visitor arrives on her front stoop, a meddling neighbor intervenes, and life as Anna knows it is well and truly over. The devils of her past are awakened - and in hot pursuit. Convinced she has no other options, she goes on the run, and in pursuit of the truth, with a washed-up musician at her side and the podcast as her guide.

Don’t know what to say denise Mina one of my favorites however this one CONVICTION was tedious. Made myself read through. Nothing was cohesive or,for that matter, remotely interesting. Cared not for any character and found I glanced through pages. What happened Denise.Terrific Departure This book is nothing like the Denise Mina of Paddy Meehan, etc. It's not a gritty urban crime novel and definitely won't be classified as 'tartan noir'. And don't get me wrong, I loved that Denise Mina.If truth be told, this book is so unlike Mina's former subjects that I almost gave up in the first quarter of the book. It was really annoying me and it seemed to move slowly. And then magically at a rich person only, castle resort in Skibo (you know, the one where Madonna had some kind of wedding celebration apparently -- who knew?) the book really changed for me. Once Anna/Sophie and Fin start running for their lives, this book changes into another gear and gets really, really good. At this point, a book I'd been dutifully/half-heartedly reading (I almost never stop reading even books I don't like) became compelling and I couldn't put it down. I'm not going to claim that I figured the villain out really early but I did figure it out before the big reveal. In addition to a plot that, once it moves into 4th gear, simply captivates, Mina also presents interesting aspects of social media, #MeToo, etc..In the end, what I liked best about this book was that it was an assured departure from an author who could have 'stayed' in Glasgow and written acclaimed crime novels. If for no other reason, the fact that Mina takes a chance with this book is a good reason to read it. That she aces it, is icing on the cake.Exceedingly clever Once upon a time mystery novels traveled straight lines through a minefield of obstacles and threats to a simple, straightforward conclusion. The detective, the victim, or some other investigator would confront a puzzle and, in the end, solve it. But bestselling mystery authors don't write books that way anymore. Instead of a single puzzle, usually involving a single crime (or a series of them), the protagonist faces a baffling array of complications. There are mysteries within mysteries. This often involves not one crime, but several. And not one story, but two or three. And then there are those that involve stories within stories within stories. Welcome to Denise Mina's mind-twisting new novel, Conviction.Mina's protagonist is Anna McDonald. Except she's not. She's a Glasgow housewife trapped in a difficult marriage with a wealthy, older lawyer named Hamish and two young daughters. (Her "relationship was in its death throes.") Except that's not all she is, either. Her name is really Sophie Bukaran. And at some point in the past, something really, really bad happened to Sophie. Which is why she's been on the run ever since.Mysteries within mysteries, starting with a true crime podcastIt's going to be a while before we learn exactly why Sophie fled her old life and fashioned a new one. But on the same terrible day that her husband leaves her for her best friend, taking the children along, her old life comes crashing back into the present when she listens to a true crime podcast. Suddenly, Sophie is off and running in an attempt to unravel a mystery involving an old friend named in the podcast. And that leads her inexorably into coming to grips with the larger mystery involving Sophie herself. Mina takes us on a rollercoaster ride from Glasgow to Venice to Paris. There's nothing straightforward about these mysteries inside mysteries. But it's fun all the way.
